We appear to be the band of choice for Asda this Christmas! Today we were at the store at The Avenue, Newton Mearns for bag packing and playing lots of Christmas music (6 hours is a long stint). Lots of nice comments and praise for our playing and over the two sessions we raised in excess of £1000. A Happy New Year to all our friends and supporters.

Off to Perth Concert Hall today for the Scottish Youth Band Championships. We were playing in the Under 16 section and received a Bronze Award although we thought we played well enough to merit a Silver Award! It was a super performance when you consider all but 5 of the band could have taken part in the Under 14 section and more than half in the Under 12's. Well done everyone and thanks to the parents for a great support.

Tonight was our Annual Concert held in Carlibar Primary School. Our guest band was Johnstone Band, one of Scotland's top brass bands. This was an ideal opportunity to perform the music we have been preparing for the Scottish Championships including The Big Top and Bohemian Rhapsody. It was also time to present our Annual Awards. This year the Most Promising Player award went to Lara Cassidy and Calum Farquhar received the award for Most Improved Player. The Musician of the Year was Christopher McCloy who also won the Players'Choice Award voted for by the band members. Christopher also gave a fine performance of the Tenor Horn solo Demelza. Johnstone Band, conducted by Martyn Ramsay, were great guests and played an entertaining programme of music including a number of solos. The obvious favourites for the youngsters were the ever popular Happy and Symphonic Highlights from Frozen. 4th

Today we had a bag pack at Wholefoods in Giffnock. It was a nice sunny day which was good as we were playing outside. We managed to raise just over £500 to add to our band funds. 12th - 14th September 2014 This was our Band Camp week-end at Gartmore House. We had a great time and managed to get through a lot of music in preparation for our very busy schedule this term. As well as the sectional and full band rehearsals we did have free time. In addition to our quiz night we thought we would try to recreate a video Mr Deans saw on YouTube. The staff band got together and played at the bottom of the garden hoping to attract a herd of cows from a few fields away. To everyone's surprise (including Mr Deans!) it worked and before long we had a herd of about 30 cows gallop to the front of the garden! A lot of tired bodies and lips returned home.

Our first rehearsal back after the summer break was really well attended. We have a very busy term coming up so please look at the Diary on the website for up to date information about concerts, competitions and rehearsals. At the end of the holiday we received a £250 grant from Warburtons to part fund our trip to Gartmore in September. We also learnt that we were receiving a magnificent award of £8500 from BBC's Children In Need appeal to fund our residential week-end at Gartmore House and provide finance for 4 follow-up Workshops. A great big thank you to both Warburtons and Children In Need for their help.

Another social event tonight this time including parents and friends. Our first ever Quiz Night was held in St John's church hall. A big thanks to Lorna Farquhar and Lesley-Anne Junner for organising such a successful evening. After a very close battle the team led by the percussion section were the eventual winners. The event raised in excess of £300 for band funds.

22nd March 2014

Today we travelled to the Burns Museum, Alloway to take part in the Brass @ the Bards' competition. This was the first competition that our beginners had taken part in and the band were rewarded with a Silver Award from adjudicator Nigel Boddice MBE. This was only our second competition at this level and everyone was delighted with the result. 27th February 2014 A night off playing to enjoy an evening at Café 158 in Barrhead. This was a way of thanking the band for all its hard work in 2013 and also help the new members settle in and get to know everyone. A great night was had by everyone and if you are ever passing through Barrhead please visit Café 158 as the food and service is superb.
