News from 2013

21st December 2013

Another fundraising bag pack to end 2013. This time in Asda at The Avenue, Newton Mearns. In spite of being interrupted by a fire alarm and being asked to leave the centre we still managed to provide lots of Christmas cheer and music for the shoppers.

24th November 2013

St John's church hall was the venue for our Annual Concert today. After last years' 5th Anniversary extravaganza it was a little more low-key this year!

The band performed its Perth programme with additional pieces including two solo items played by Christopher McCloy (Tenor Horn) and Rebekah Simpson (Trombone).

The final concert of the year is when the Annual Awards are given out and this year they were presented by Douglas Yates.

For the second year in succession the Players' Choice award went to Christopher McCloy. The Most Promising Player was Esme Johnston and the Most Improved Player award was given to Harry Coyle. The Musician of the Year for 2013 was trombonist Rebekah Simpson.

17th November 2013

This was our annual trip to the Perth Concert Hall for the Scottish Youth Band Championships. We moved up to the Development Section (Under 16s) this year to accommodate our more experienced players. Our band is still quite young with more than half of the band being aged 12 or under.

Our programme had a film theme and included music from The Great Escape, Shenandoah and James Bond. We played really well and gained a bronze award which we were delighted with at our first attempt at this level.

21st September 2013

Today was fundraising day. We were bag packing at the Whole Foods store in Giffnock. The weather was kind enough to enable a small group of players to play at the store entrance. The band received many complements by shoppers and passers-by for its playing and deportment. The new hoodies worked!

22nd June 2013

Tonight was Part 2 of our annual concert!

The Co-operative Funeralcare Band returned to the town play a fundraising concert as a way of making up for having to shorten their performance at our concert last year.

To start the evening Levern Valley took the opportunity to play a number of new pieces before handing over to the guest band conducted by Allan Ramsay.

As well as conducting the band, Allan also compered the evening giving the large audience an insight into the music played. Our own band was captivated from the first piece and thoroughly enjoyed hearing a great performance from the Co-op Band and it's excellent soloists.

1st June 2013

Today we took part in the Barrhead Gala Day playing at the Cowan Park bandstand. The Gala Day was re-introduced this year after a couple years absence. The organisers put on a really great event for the community and hopefully it will continue to grow in future years.

 25th April 2013

This evening we performed at the 40th Anniversary of the Barrhead Rotary Club in St John's Church, Barrhead. Also taking part in the concert was the East Renfrewshire Schools' Intermediate Choir.

The Rotary Club very kindly donated the proceeds from the concert to the Mary's Meals charity.

24th March 2013

West of Scotland Brass Band Association held their first Youth Band competition today ..... Brass at the Bards' ..... which was held at the Burns' Museum, Alloway.

Levern Valley played in the Novice Section and we were awarded a Silver Award and 1st place overall. This was the first competition for our newest band members and they all played brilliantly.

17th March 2013

Today St Mirren Football Club was playing Hearts in the final of the Scottish League Cup. We were invited to play at the end of the hospitality lunch in Paisley before the 300+ supporters left for Hampden. We played a number of choruses of Oh When The Saints Go Marching In and we raised almost £300 for our funds. We are sure we helped in a small way towards St Mirren winning the League Cup for the first time. C'mon The Saints!

7th February 2013

We performed this evening at the East Renfrewshire concert in Carlibar PS along with East Renfrewshire Brass Ensemble, Croy Silver Band & Barrhead Burgh Band.

Our short programme included Scotland The Brave, Delilah, Can-Can and The Great Escape. We featured our beginner group as soloists in Muffins Rhapsody by William Himes. Not bad progress after just 4 rehearsals!

10th January 2013

Tonight or new members came along to their first rehearsal. Most have only been playing since August but it is a boost to their confidence to take part in a bigger ensemble.

They were surprised to be the stars of one of the pieces instead of hiding in the background but all enjoyed the experience and promised to come back next week!
