Up to date information about your favourite Brass Band

25 November 2018

An early 8.45am start this morning to journey to Perth Concert Hall to play in the Scottish Youth brass band championships. We performed really well and at the end of the day we were presented with another Gold Award. Unfortunately due a change in the format we were unable to stay for the results and adjudicators remarks which weren't due till 6.30. This was disappointing as it is great and exciting part of the day. It would have been nice to listen to what the adjudicators thought about our performance. Very happy band with our Gold Award though.

15 November 2018

Tonight was our Annual Concert and Awards Night with our guests The Johnstone Band. We were able to play the music we have chosen to perform at the upcoming Youth Championships to an audience for the first time ... the march Exhultation, Intermezzo from Cavalleria Rusticana, Mountain King Rock, Caribbean Holiday and George of the Jungle.                         This years Awards were presented by Douglas Yates to

all worthy winners.

After the interval Johnstone Band performed a varied programme of fun and thoughtful music the highlight being a quite superb rendition of 'Feed The Birds' by soprano player Helen Mitchell who mesmerised the youngsters and the audience.

28-30 September 2018

A few weeks of blowing the cobwebs away in the new session and we headed to Gartmore House for our Band Camp. After a bit of fun watching the younger members attempting to put covers on their duvets ... some even struggled with pillow cases! ... it was down to some work. Thanks to a hard working team of tutors we made great progress over the course of the weekend preparing our new music for the session ahead playing in sectionals and full band. The Quiz on Saturday night was won by the Trombone section with the back row Cornets a close second. Band Camp is a weekend that everyone looks forward to every year and this one was the best ever!

31 May 2018

In our final performance of the session we took part in a Charity Concert organised by Barrhead Rotary. Also taking part were East Renfrewshire Schools' Jazz Band and the newly formed Barrhead Ukulele Group. Over £700 was raised for local charities ... a great effort by everyone involved.

21 April 2018

We held our Annual Quiz Night in St Thomas' Church Hall in Neilston. Despite a smaller attendance than expected, a great night was had by everyone and we managed to raise in excess of £300. A special thank you to Rhona Campbell, our quiz setter and MC for the evening.

 22 February 2018

Tonight we had a great concert with the East Renfrewshire Brass Ensemble in Carlibar PS, Barrhead. Each group played a short programme before ending the evening playing MacArthur Park and Hey Jude as a massed band.

Our programme included Grease, Slavonic Dance No.3 and the traditional showstopper Muffins Rhapsody featuring our beginner group as the soloists. They even remembered to take a bow!

11 January 2018

Our new starts arrived all looking a bit wary but thanks to their mentors Chris, Esme and Joel they all went away having enjoyed the experience and promising to come back!

4 January 2018

An early start back this term to blow away the cobwebs and Christmas pud as we await the arrival of beginners next week.

20 December 2017

Last day of the school term usually finds us at Asda, Barrhead and this year was no exception. Again some lovely comments about the playing and the Christmas cheer we brought to the shoppers.

17 December 2017

Bag packing at Asda, Newton Mearns today enabled us to add £700+ to the Band Funds ... a great effort by all who took part. Lots of encouraging comments about the playing of the 3 groups who played over the 5 hours ... some even did a double shift and we even managed to sell some CDs!

26 November 2017

Festival of Brass 2017 in Perth Concert Hall saw the band receive a Gold Award and overall runner-up place in the Development Section of the Scottish Youth Band Championships for the second consecutive year! A fantastic achievement yet again. The band performance and solo playing was well received by the audience and adjudicators alike. The adjudicators praised the excellent work done with the basics of brass band performance, the choice of music played and gave special mention to our kit player, Rachael.

16 November 2017

Tonight was our Annual Concert in Carlibar Primary. Our guests this year were the street band Brass, Aye?. The concert gave us the opportunity to include pieces from our programme for Perth Concert Hall next week as well as including solo performances from Hollie Campbell (Cornet), Max Shimanyan (Flugel Horn) and Harry Coyle (Tuba).

Brass, Aye? performed an enjoyable set and we finished the concert with the massed band item Hoots Mon.

Our Award winners for 2017 were Musician of the Year: Hollie Campbell, Most Improved Player: Katie Little and Most Promising Player: Marley McEwan. The Players' Choice Award voted for by the band members went to Hollie Campbell. The awards were presented by a great friend of the band, Douglas Yates

3-5 November 2017

Band Camp time!

We had a great time at Gartmore House. A lot of fun and plenty  of hard work preparing for our Annual Concert and the Scottish Youth Brass Band Championships later in the month. A big thank you to the tutors and the house staff for making it a successful weekend.

 7 October 2017

Our first event of the new school session took us to Tweedie Hall in Linwood. This was the venue of Brass Day 2017 hosted by Johnstone Band. Four bands gave individual performances before getting together for the Big Brass Finale. In addition to the host band and LVCB, the JP Berrie Big Band and the street band Brass, Aye? entertained the audience. Informative and amusing Workshops were presented to young and old by Davur Juul Magnussen (RSNO principal trombone) and Chris Bradley (principal cornet of the Whitburn Band). All workshops and performances were very well received by all participants and an enthusiastic audience.

May 2017

We finished off the session with a successful recording session for our proposed 10th Anniversary CD. Another session after the summer break and hopefully the CD will be available later this year.

26 March 2017

Our good friends from King's Park Youth band invited us to take part in an afternoon of music in King's Park Church. Considering it was Mother's Day and also the sunniest and warmest day of the year we played to a large and appreciative audience. We tried something a little different to end our performance by playing A Night at the Opera. This piece is a suite of well known opera songs with a narrator telling the story of each piece ... thank you Rhona!!

2 March 2017

Tonight was our annual social evening. This is a thank you to the band for all their hard work throughout the previous year. It is also an opportunity for the new members to get to know everyone in a social environment away from the rehearsal room. This year we went for a few games of bowling and some food at Braehead which got a big thumbs up from all who took part.

23 February 2017

This evening we presented a concert with East Renfrewshire Brass Ensemble in Carlibar Primary School. Barrhead Burgh and Croy bands joined forces to play some fun music. Our beginners, who only joined the band last month, played a solo item accompanied by our band. Well done to them for a super effort. We had a great audience and the were sent home feet tapping with a massed item from all the participants ... a hundred plus brass (and percussion!) players playing 500 miles.

26 January 2017

Tonight we welcomed our newest members to the band. The are all Primary 6 pupils who have been playing since August last year. A number of our senior and former players were present to help mentor the beginners and they all appeared to have a great time. We hope so as it's only 5 weeks until their first concert!
